(clockwise from upperleft) Trader Joe's calcium enriched applesauce. Chocolate chip cookie, devilishly dipped in yet more chocolate. Fresh green beans with TJ's Roasted Sunflower Seed Butter for dipping. Caprese kabobs.Details: The green beans were Wegman's pre-cleaned, pre-packaged ones, and looked gorgeous - more so than the open bins of fresh beans I normally find in grocery stores. I simply cut them smaller. The Caprese kabobs I am quite proud of because after my mistakes last time, I finely diced the basil (from a cool little plant I keep next to my sink and pick off what I need - goodbye to my former ways of paying $2 a bundle!) and sprinkled the kabobs with fresh ground pepper and a touch of sea salt. I truly expected at least two or three kabobs to return untouched, but Nugget somehow found room for all eleven kabobs. And I know what you're thinking - we all know he ate that cookie first! Maybe eating a sandwich for breakfast actually made him hungrier for lunch, who knows...

I love the Caprese Kabobs! I want some for my own lunch!
A commenter on my blog suggested I read your blog since I was looking for after school snack ideas for my kindergartener who started school yesterday. I will be reading your blog from here on out. I love those caprese kabobs.
Those caprese kabobs look great! Did you drizzle them with anything? Balsamic or olive oil?
Found your site through the Sun article. The blog is inspiring! I live on the Eastern Shore but my next trip to Baltimore I am picking up a couple of those bento boxes for my kids. Thanks for the great ideas! (The photos are wonderful too.)
Annelies -
I can't remember if you have mentioned this before or not - do you put Nugget's lunch and snack in the Laptop Lunch box? Just wondering.
Thank you sp, mama urchin, jen and amy!
jen, I didn't drizzle them with anything. It's just mozz, tomatoes, basil, sea salt and pepper.
Hi rlr - the picture you see for this entry is all in a Laptop Lunchbox. All the little containers are within a larger container that holds them, but I just take a picture close-up to see the food better. When you are asking about the snack, I do not pack a snack just the lunch. (I think that is what you are asking? If I pack a seperate snack from lunch?). The large outer container that holds the little container all fits (along with a water bottle) into an insulated zipper carrying case that kind of resembles a laptop computer case.
If this doesn't answer your question, I'm happy to try and clarify better if you could reword it, but hopefully I correctly understood.
I was going to do the caprese kabobs today but was out of toothpicks! So we just grape tomatoes and cut-up string cheese with a sprinkle of dried basil and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Awesome! :-)
jen, I love how you improvised with items you had on hand. Sounds excellent!
Sorry for the confusion! You did answer my question, even though (in trying to keep things brief) I left out part of my thought process. Yes, I was curious about whether that's just Nugget's lunch, or if the food shown also includes a snack. When I pack our LLBs, it always seems like I over-pack them. I can pack more than enough for myself, my son, and my daughter - then just bring along an extra drink (we have two complete systems, including the drink bottle and bag). I probably just need more practice at packing them - we got ours at the beginning of summer, so I haven't packed that many lunches yet.
